Mediation Experience
Stephen is a barrister in practice at 5 Raymond
Buildings, chambers of Desmond Browne QC and Adrienne Page QC. He
was accredited with CEDR in 2002 and has been conducting mediations
for CEDR and on his own account since the autumn of 2003. He
qualified as a Registered Mediator in 2004 and is now on CEDR’s
panel of mediators instructed for CEDR mediation work. He has acted
as lead mediator in a range of IP, defamation and other civil
disputes, including the following –
IP, defamation and related disputes
• Claims of approximately £1.5M for copyright infringement from the
exploitation of musical works on a well-known album. The parties
reached agreement on the commercial terms on the day of the
mediation and the case settled soon afterwards.
• High Court dispute concerning the purchase and sale of computer
games equipment. Mediation settled on the day.
• Special damage claims for defamation of several hundred thousand
pounds arising out of the termination of employment (co-mediator).
• Defamation dispute between residents of estate. Settled on the day
of mediation.
Other disputes
• High Court dispute concerning the importation and sale of timber.
The parties came close to settlement on the day.
• Claim arising from the abortive sale of a restaurant business.
Settled on the day of mediation.
• Quasi-matrimonial dispute (worth £300,000) with claims for orders
for sale of property and competing claims of mortgagees. Parties
attended the mediation in person and agreed terms subject to legal
advice.

Stephen has been in practice for 21 years and
practises in the following areas –
• General (common law/chancery) civil work.
• Copyright, performers’ rights, passing off.
• Defamation, privacy, data protection and related claims.
• Communications (satellite, telecommunications) disputes, both
regulatory and contractual.
• Media, entertainment and publishing disputes.
• Sports law.
Stephen is classified as a Leading Junior in the current directories
(Legal 500 and Chambers) for Media and Entertainment Work. He has
acted for many well-known figures and media organisations, including
Michael Jackson, Robbie Williams, EMI, Random House, Universal,
Celador, BSkyB, the BBC and News Group Newspapers.
He is also instructed in sports law matters (IP, contract and
regulatory) and is recommended in the Legal 500 under sports law. He
acted for David Bedford in his dispute over the 118 118 adverts.
Stephen was also on the SIF panel in relation to solicitors’
negligence work for many years.
