Mediator Profile
Iain Christie is a barrister and mediator at 5 Raymond Buildings,
Gray’s Inn. He was called to the bar in 1989 and spent 9 years as a
legal adviser at the Foreign & Commonwealth Office before returning
to independent practice in 2000.
During his time in the Diplomatic Service he specialised in human
rights, acting for the Government in proceedings before the European
Court of Human Rights. His case-load covered a wide range of
disputes concerning most aspects of civil and commercial law. He
also represented the United Kingdom in a number of international
negotiations at the Council of Europe and United Nations, and worked
on several Parliamentary Bills including the Human Rights Act 1998.
Since returning to private practice he has continued to specialise
in human rights, particularly in the field of freedom of expression.
He co-edits a book on The Law of Privacy and the Media. But his
practice includes all areas of media law, including defamation,
breach of confidence, contempt of court, data protection and freedom
of information, as well as some work outside this field.
Iain has two young daughters with whom he spends much of his spare
time. In addition he is a keen golfer and enjoys the performing arts
and travel.
