Christopher Morcom Q.C. is Head of Hogarth Chambers, formed in 2001
from a merger between the Intellectual Property Chambers at One
Raymond Buildings, of which he was Head, with 5 New Square. He read
Natural Sciences and Law at Trinity College, Cambridge. He obtained
a First Class and a Certificate of Honour in the Bar Finals and was
called to the Bar in 1963 by Middle Temple, from whom he received
several awards including an Astbury Scholarship. He is also a member
of the Mauritius Bar (admitted 1979). He was appointed Queen's
Counsel in 1991 and elected a Bencher of Middle Temple in 1996.
Since the late 1960's, he has practised in all aspects of
Intellectual Property. Trade marks and related fields are a
particular speciality. His work includes giving general advice on a
wide range of litigious and non-litigious intellectual property
matters and conducting litigation in the courts and proceedings in
the Trade Marks Registry and giving evidence of English law for the
purpose of proceedings abroad. For many years until 2001 he was the
Bar representative on the Government’s Standing Advisory Committee
on Industrial Property.
ADR/mediation
Christopher Morcom, a Founder Member of the IP and Media ADR Group,
is trained as a mediator with ADR Chambers (UK) Ltd and with INTA,
being a Member of INTA’s International Panel of Neutrals since 2003.
He is also a Member of the WIPO Arbitration and Mediation Center’s
List of Neutrals.
International and other organisations
• Member of ECTA (European Communities Trademark Association) since
its foundation; Member of ECTA’s Law Committee for many years.
•
Member of the International Trademark Association (INTA) since 1981
and a member of the Board of Directors of INTA from 1998-2000.
•
Vice-President and Council Member of the British Group of AIPPI and
a Member of the Executive Committee on several occasions.
• A
founder member, and from 1985-1999 Chairman, of the Competition Law
Association (British Group of the International League of
Competition Law). Past President (1996-1998) of International League
of Competition Law and an Honorary President since 2000.
•
Member of the Board and Council of Experts of the Intellectual
Property Institute.
•
Associate Member of ITMA and CIPA and a Member of CIPA’s Litigators’
Accrediting Board.
Publications.
•
Many articles in various specialist and other publications,
including the European Intellectual Property Review, the Trade Mark
Reporter, Counsel Magazine and the Law Society’s Gazette.
•
Author of ‘Service Marks - a Guide to the New Law’ (ESC 1987), ‘A
Guide to the Trade Marks Act 1994' (Butterworths, 1994) and (with
Roughton and Graham) ‘The Modern Law of Trade Marks’ (Butterworths,
2000). Contributor of the UK chapter in ‘Famous and Well-Known
Marks’ (Mostert) (Butterworths, 1997).
